InstaCal test of PCMCIA card gives error "Invalid digital port number"


If you get this specific error in the InstaCal analog test for a PCMCIA (PC-Card), then the following advice often fixes it.  No other advice is available.

On some laptops, the BIOS seem to assign a base address that is not free or is not mapped properly through the PCMCIA controller built into the laptop.   

Try to manually assign a lower base address, via the XP device manager, to the PC-CARD.   See screenshot below.   Uncheck the checkbox in the lower red circle.  Then manually set the start of the base address to 0300 or 0600 in the upper red circle
