How can I measure voltages and temperatures with my A/D board?
Depending on the A/D board that you have, there are a few possibilities. With a PCI-DAS08, PCIM-DAS1602/16, any of CIO-DAS08 family of products (not including the CIO-DAS08/JR family), or any of our CIO-DAS16 products: you can use a CIO-EXP16 or CIO-EXP32 A/D expansion board. These boards allow direct readings of both analog and temperature readings from thermocouples. If you would like to wire all inputs (both thermocouples and analog signals to the CIO-EXP board) we recommend the CIO-EXP32 as you can set the gain for each half of the board. Thermocouple inputs (high gain) can be wired to channels 0 - 15 of the CIO-EXP32 while analog inputs (low gain) can be wired to channels 16 - 31 of the CIO-EXP32.
If your analog inputs are within - 5 volts to + 5 volts, you can connect a SCB-37 via a C37FFS-5 cable to either a CIO-EXP16 or EXP32. You can then wire these analog inputs to the SCB-37 and the thermocouples to the CIO-EXP board. From our factory, the CIO-EXP16 is configured to output to channel 0 of the A/D board. Channel 7 is used for cold junction compensation (CJC). Therefore, your analog inputs can be wired directly into channels 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, .. .
For boards that do not support the CIO-EXP product, you can use an isolation module and rack. These transducer modules are isolated and, depending on the module you choose, can provide linearization and amplification for a host of measurements including thermocouple, analog voltage, frequency, and strain. These modules typically convert their input signals to a voltage our A/D cards can easily read. Please contact us for additional information.
